Graphite and Wax Procreate Pencil Brush Kit

Fine Grain Supply Co proudly presents our first ever Procreate Brush Bundle, The Graphite and Wax Pencil Kit! Each brush was made using handmade textures and real pencil marks that were photographed in high resolution and perfected in Adobe Photoshop before importing into Procreate to make the brushes. In addition, each hatching brush was taken from full pages of hand drawn hatching, and turned into a texture that you can quickly apply to your drawing. These differently angled hatches can be combined to make darker and darker tones as you layer them on top of one another. If you’re looking for a super fast way to create a realistic hand-hatched drawing, you’ve found it!

This brush set also includes 6 paper textures scanned from the stacks of paper found in the Fine Grain Art Studio, as well as 9 grungey textures made by hand with a can of black Speedball oil based printing ink, and rolled onto various surfaces. 1 of the included textures is a mangled sheet of black paper printed on a laser printer and distressed by folding and sanding. Everything included in the set was hand made with real materials. Hands got messy, things got wild.

Notes:

Please note, these brushes will only work in Procreate on an iPad using iPad OS 14 or higher, with Procreate version 5.0 or higher. They are not currently available in other formats for other devices, but hopefully they will be eventually.

To install directly from iPad:

After downloading the file, go to your iPad’s Files app and look in the Downloads folder. You will find the zip file here. Select this file and your ipad will automatically create a folder that contains your files.
If you have an older ipad OS, download an unzipping app like the free iZip from the Apple App Store and install it. When you go to download your files, choose the option “Open in “iZip””, then click “OK”. After this, you can find the folder in your Files app in a folder called “iZip.”

In the top right of the folder that was unzipped, tap “Select” and then select the .brushset file. Tap “Share” on the bottom left of the screen, and then tap “Open in Procreate.” Your new brush set will now be loaded, and you can locate them at the top of your brush library.

Downloading from a Computer:

Download brushes and unzip the file on your computer. On a Mac, you can simply double click the file and it will unzip automatically. On a PC, right click the folder and click “Extract All, and then follow the on-screen instructions. Transfer the files to your ipad using airdrop, Dropbox, or thumb drive, and follow the instructions for installing on an iPad.

Notes on using the brushes:

To adjust the size of the pencil strokes in the hatching brushes, select the brush in the palette and then click it again to open Brush Studio. Inside Brush Studio, go to Grain, and increase or decrease the scale depending on what you want it to look like. I like to work with a slightly gray color instead of black, to make the pencil strokes look even more realistic.

To use paper textures in your procreate drawings, simple click the tool icon in the upper left corner of the screen and choose Insert a File. Navigate to your Graphite and Wax folder and choose the file you want to use by touching it with your pencil or finger. Procreate will import the file, and you can resize it to fit by dragging the handles until it’s the size you want. Feel free to adjust the opacity of your layer to get the desired results. In the layers panel, create a layer on top of the layer your paper texture is on and draw on this.

The pencil brushes use the tilt function of the Apple Pencil for even more shading options, behaving like an actual pencil, so don’t forget to make use of that in your drawings!
